Story Movie

Louis, a vampire, approaches Malloy, a journalist with a penchant for sensational stories, to tell him the story of his life. In 1791, after losing his wife and child, the young Louis wants to die, but an encounter with the vampire Lestat opens the door to eternal life for him.

Review 4K Movie

By the time of the game’s release, we knew vampires primarily as a collection of complex mystical maxims, detached from human existence and driven by an essential mission—to possess a woman destined by fate or to fulfill a specific mission that was unclear to humans. Thus, vampires became folkloric figures, where the character is always more of an abstract example than a real person. Vampires are portrayed in much the same way in Gothic novels. *Interview...* departs from the canon and portrays vampires as romantic figures embodying a forbidden and captivating passion that subverts established definitions of sexuality. Moreover, in the wake of the closing century, the film reexamines gender roles and the institution of the family as a whole.

Riding the Wave of the Rising Interview Genre

Neil Jordan’s film, adapted from Anne Rice’s vampire novel, possesses an operatic scope while following a complex, exalted protagonist—a beautiful monster undergoing a transformation that spans many years. Through the narrator’s complex inner journey, the interview that frames the narrative dramatizes the tension between traditionalism and postmodernism, exploring the protagonist’s resistance to his true nature.

Moreover, the film reimagined the image of vampires for the general audience, not only thanks to the participation of rising Hollywood stars (and years later, we’ll realize that they truly established themselves among the acting elite for the long haul and changed many approaches to character portrayal) and its well-composed shots, but also by presenting characters we can empathize with.

And it is precisely the interview genre—which began to evolve from serious talk shows to replace soap opera-style “chit-chat”—that helps us journey alongside the protagonist and feel genuine empathy.

A Resurgence of Interest in the Vampire Genre

*Interview with the Vampire* revived interest in the vampire film industry as a whole, which flourished most strongly in the second half of the 1990s but reached its peak with the *Underworld* franchise: now we’ve begun not just to follow vampires, but to conceive of their existence within the framework of very long, epic stories.
