Hide and Go Shriek 4K 1988 Ultra HD 2160p

With a setting reminiscent of “The Blood Initiation” and “Killer Robots”—a maniac slashing teenagers in a store—the now virtually forgotten (yet well-translated) film “ Hide and Go Shriek’ falls short of the two aforementioned films in virtually every respect—it lacks both the intriguing screenplay of *The Blood Initiation* and the charismatic droids from *Killer Robots*. One could mention another example—*The Uninvited Guest*—but "Hide and Go Shriek" is a world apart from it.

Nevertheless, it’s good enough for a one-time viewing.

The plot isn’t even worth mentioning—a group of teenagers spends the night in a store owned by one of the guys’ fathers, and just as they’re starting to fall for each other, a certain individual shows up who enjoys killing people.

That’s about it. Well, let’s take a look at the components. You can practically ignore the acting—the only decent performance came from the actor playing the store security guard, who also happens to be an ex-con. As for directorial and cinematographic flourishes—you know, there aren’t any at all. Well, it’s a movie, all right—let your Sam Raimi come up with all sorts of twists and turns, but here it’s just like a hundred other similar films. Nudity—there’s plenty of that. Even too much. I don’t know how old Skip Skolnik was when he made this movie, but it feels like he was about to turn eighteen, because for the first half-hour, the film presents us with a bunch of horny teenagers, turning the whole thing into some kind of teen movie.

Boobs flash left and right, people are constantly kissing and hugging—which is actually pretty good—but where’s the slasher movie? And then, about halfway through, Skulnik finally delivers a horror film that, while not perfect, is a solid, old-school horror flick in its own right. To be honest, there aren’t exactly a lot of special effects (the most spectacular scene is when a girl’s head gets severed by an elevator), and they try to make up for it with blood, but overall it’s not bad. Although it’s still a long way from *The Uninvited Guest*. Oh well.

The killer is a run-of-the-mill type—not without some flair, but not particularly memorable either. They try to keep his identity hidden until the very end and present us with an unexpected twist in the finale, but it doesn’t quite work out. It’s always the same—when the filmmakers try to make us suspect a certain type of person but still don’t show the killer’s face, you can be 90% sure it’s a completely different person.

Basically, “Hide and Go Shriek” is a pretty rough and not at all original slasher movie that you could watch if you haven’t found anything else to watch yet and have an hour or two to spare. But really—there are plenty of good movies out there, so don’t waste your time on mediocre ones like this.
