Review 4K Movie

This film is extremely dear to me as a memory. Howl was one of the first horror movies I ever saw, and the moment Terry digs through the filing cabinet and a healthy clawed paw appears in front of her is the first scene that made me jerk in my chair. It was after her that I began to appreciate horror films, and first of all - the factor of surprise in them (at least in the best of them).

It was, however, a very long time ago ... Since then, I have occasionally come across some films in which analog or computer wolf-men appeared, but compared to Dante's 81-year-old Eddie, all or almost all of them looked and continue look like relatively harmless puppies. The modern viewer, tempted by all sorts of 'Hostels' and 'Saws', Dante's werewolf, of course, is unlikely to be able to scare, but the impressiveness and obvious ... let's say, the historical and cinematic authority of this individual, in my opinion, is undeniable. Roughly speaking, 30 years ago the creators of 'Howl' managed to make a truly authoritative in its magnificence, toothy creature. I might be wrong, but Anthony Hickox's werewolf in the first Wax Museum was ripped off Eddie Quist.

The script itself can be criticized as much as you like - and that it does not look very much like Brandner's book, and that the action is developing sluggishly, and that the ending is pathetic and stupid - but as soon as the eared woolen Ed with his relatives appears in the frame, all these shortcomings can be automatically forgive and just admire these gorgeous monsters, 'received' by the way in the same year a couple of absolutely deserved awards for makeup and special effects.

By far one of the best, if not the best werewolf movies. And, of course, the cult status of 'Howl' is confirmed by as many as six more or less nasty sequels, one way or another emphasizing all the charm of Dante's original.
