Story Movie

Grace hides her children in a secluded mansion on an island where the family awaits the end of World War II. A war from which Grace's husband must return.

Her daughter and son suffer from a strange condition, they can't stand direct daylight. When three new servants arrive at the house, they have to follow the rules: all rooms must always be in semi-darkness, and no door can be opened unless the previous one is locked. But the smooth flow of life in the house soon comes to an end when an otherworldly entity tries to disrupt the order.

The beginning is typical of all American thrillers. A gothic manor surrounded by dry trees, creaking in the wind; mysterious servants and a defenseless single woman with two children. It seems to be another specific movie for fans of "more horrible". But after half an hour you are completely immersed in the mysterious atmosphere. And though a lot of things are not clear, the events flicker with the speed of an express train, Alejandro Amenabar managed to chain the viewer to the chair. The dark colors of the picture and the half-whispered music make the whole movie sit in suspense. This is the psychology of man, which can no longer be done with anything ...

There was a lot of controversy surrounding the movie: does it not contradict Christian considerations? Religion in this movie is a background, a kind of supplement around which the philosophy of Grace's (the protagonist) thinking is built. Faith and faithlessness at the same time show the psychological state of the woman, making her doubt: "Did we get the end right?".

The ending also came as a huge surprise to many. Expecting a banal denouement, like moving the family or getting rid of the "ghosts", the viewer is in some disappointment. Disappointment not from the movie... There is a feeling of incompleteness, and it is wonderful, because with it immediately appears a space for fantasy.

The performance of the actors is a joy. Children very often look unnatural in such movies. Either too mature, or unnecessarily naive. But Alakina Mann and James Bentley did an excellent job.

The movie is very difficult psychologically for both the actors and the audience. Probably the movie "The Others", one of those movies that every self-respecting movie buff should watch for sure....
