Early in his career, James Mangold gave us a truly stunning, unpredictable thriller that brings several people together at a remote motel. The opening scenes vaguely introduce a dangerous patient who needs to be transferred for a medical evaluation to determine his fate. This might seem like a minor detail, since the first act already introduces us to various characters whom the inclement weather has brought together in one place. However, the director structures everything in such a way that no detail can be overlooked.

The plot introduces eleven people, whose stories are gradually revealed. Thanks to the non-linear narrative, the characters are revealed to the viewer one by one. We begin at a motel where the manager, Larry, meets the travelers. Next, the viewer is thrown into the first flashback.

A severe storm has washed out the highway. A family of three is forced to stop on the road. In this way, we are introduced to three characters: father George, mother Alice, and son Timmy. Another flashback takes us even further back in time to introduce us to Paris, a woman of easy virtue, who is also speeding down the ill-fated highway in pursuit of a criminal and reveals a single coincidental detail that connects the first two flashbacks. An unexpected encounter on the road with the married couple Lou and Ginny introduces two more motel guests.

The third flashback focuses on Edward, a former police officer and now the driver for the famous actress Caroline, who—due to bad weather and poor visibility—allow the plot to weave all three flashbacks into a single story. That brings us to two more guests. While the viewer is still reeling from these coincidences, the director draws attention to the mysterious motel that has so conveniently managed to shelter all the characters. Why this place, of all places? Because the terrible weather is blocking the characters’ path—it’s best to wait it out. It’s reminiscent of Tarantino’s *The Hateful Eight*, only in a more twisted form.

After introducing the characters and their differing perspectives on the backwater motel, the film begins to build suspense. The unexpected appearance in the middle of the night of Officer Sam and a prisoner raises alarm. Things are already bad enough here—trauma, injuries. A criminal is the last thing we needed. Thankfully, at least there’s a police officer with him. That’s two more people. By bringing several people together under one roof, the director sets his main plot device in motion—the murders.

A brilliant blend of suspense, mystery, and constant suspicion. Who is the killer? Is it someone living on the motel grounds? Some kind of maniac who came out of the cornfields (Isaac, still burned)? Or is it one of the new guests?
Someone who has something to hide? The narrative draws us into this tangled web, leaving “Easter eggs” in the spirit of Stephen King with each new death.

The film handles the thriller genre flawlessly, eliminating the undesirables one by one. But just when you realize the climax must be near, it doesn’t come. The circle of suspects narrows noticeably, which leads into the fourth flashback, showing how the police officer and the prisoner ended up on this road. You seem to be starting to piece together this mysterious puzzle in your head, until it happens… a harsh, unexpected, disconcerting twist that completely shatters the genre’s conventions.

After the shock, the director gives free rein to the mystical, and the viewer begins to set aside their suspicions about the killer. That’s what James Mangold did—he tricked the entire audience. It’s stunning. It’s magnificent. Until the climax delivers the final blow, showing that you shouldn’t underestimate the last two minutes of the film. First of all, the viewer hasn’t yet recovered from the initial shock. They’re trying to process and make sense of what they’ve seen, piecing together all the fragments of this mosaic, when they’re literally stunned by the revelation of the entire story right up to the very end. It’s a very clever and intriguing move that brings this film to a magnificent close. Majestic and insane!

This isn’t some “Indiana Jones” sequel. It’s a magnificent film with an unexpected twist within the twist.
