TV producer Max Renn, looking for fresh and original porn for his cable channel, accidentally stumbles upon "Videodrome," a show about sex and murder that comes out of nowhere, the repeated viewing of which corrupts not only the psyche but also the human flesh.

I have seen very few of Cronenberg's films to be able to judge him as a director. Nevertheless, I can't help but say a few words about one of his best works - a rather old film by today's standards, but not at all irrelevant in the same respects - Videodrome.

This film is so difficult to comprehend that it can be interpreted from completely different perspectives. And for me, as a person of the 21st century or the 3rd millennium (there is not much difference), it seems to be first of all a kind of manual, demonstrating how not to treat what you see... Especially, in the blue screen!

In fact, there is much more realistic than fantastic in this film, as hard as that may be to realize. And if to imagine that all what happened to Mr. Renn is only a figment of his sick imagination, it makes you feel uncomfortable at all, because in this case all this phantasmagoria can be perceived only as a step away from gloomy and threatening reality. Admittedly, I wish it were a little different.

The theme of violence on the screen, so popular in today's world, was just beginning to conquer TV airwaves back then. And here we can see a direct hint that the already unhealthy broadcasters (in this case, American broadcasters) are headed in the wrong direction in their attempts to attract TV audiences to their screens by any means, even the most vile. And Max Renn, as charismatic as his character is, is one of them. He chose his way 'for business reasons', he does not care about the feelings of the audience, he only cares about money and fame. It's sad that there are such 'Wrenns' like dirt these days, and not just in the United States.

One more thing. A special thanks to the director for not shying away from shocking his audience. Still, some of the scenes shown in the film could somewhat puzzle the viewers of those years, accustomed to softer shots. Not like they are now. It's been almost 30 years, after all!

Videodrome belongs to the rare number of films that can interest viewers many years later, not in terms of film history, although no one has cancelled that, but primarily as a film that stands out and is not lost among others, which has retained its relevance and originality to this day.
