Review 4K Movie

As soon as 'Train to Busan' was screened in out-of-competition program at Cannes and then made a splash at home in South Korea, news of preparations to launch a Hollywood version of the film appeared immediately. Again, Hollywood is turning to world cinema, and not for the first year, to the Asian market. We have already seen a successful remake of 'Double Castling' and a terrible one of 'Oldboy'. What will come out here is hard to say, but at least the news of a remake of the new! film, once again confirms the lack of ideas in the dream factory, particularly in the horror and thriller genre.

'Train to Busan' is the feature film debut of Korean animator and director Yong Sang-ho, a sequel to his own animated film 'Seoul Station. The plot of the movie is based on a father and his daughter traveling from Seoul to Busan in the midst of the zombie apocalypse.

Speaking of zombies: they are great here. The makeup, plastique and choreography of the brain-lovers trump all modern Western equivalents. Young Sang-ho's film features a type of fast zombie ('Dawn of the Dead' by Snyder) acting in the likeness of a swarm ('War of the Worlds Z'). But even the proverbial tongue-in-cheek about the originality of zombie movies, the director, aka the screenwriter, was able to find his own twist by putting the main characters in a train filled with 'running zombies' and making the dead respond not to smell, but to eye contact and sound, which introduced puzzles and challenges not previously used in the film, such as a moment in the film where one of the characters simply threw his jacket over a zombie so he'd stop attacking.

The cast of characters is a set of templates: a workaholic father who has no time for his daughter, a husband with a pregnant wife, young lovers, and a random character, a homeless man, who wandered into the mix. But to all this there is no complaints about the actors: all the characters are fully revealed through their deeds and actions, rarely phrases - there is just no time to talk in 'Train to Busan'. The zombies take over the train with such speed that heartwarming flashbacks before death are an inadmissible luxury ('The Walking Dead'). All the actors are not heroes, they are ordinary people like you and me - selfish and altruistic people who change one way or another under the pressure of circumstances. They have nothing to fight with the dead, and their goal is different - to survive at any cost and reach their destination, where they are waiting for the desired safety... or not?

As a result, we have an almost masterpiece non-stop zombie action flick, where there is still time for drama and empathy for the main characters, something that fans have been waiting for for many years of stagnation in the genre. I recommend it to fans of zombie movies and Korean cinema - both will not be disappointed.
