The slapstick action movie 'Crash' starring Gerard Butler and a plot promising a standard story was an unexpected sensation of early 2023.

The film was released in the U.S. box office on January 13th and was an unpredictable success. By mid-February it ranks as the 5th highest-grossing film at the U.S. box office. It is surpassed only by 'Avatar: The Way of the Water,' 'Puss in Boots 2: The Last Wish,' 'M3GAN' and 'My Terrible Neighbor.

'Crash' is the story of a failed commercial flight. An old plane sets off with just 14 passengers on board. One of them is a murderer who, years later, is apprehended and transported for trial. The weather conditions turn out to be bad, lightning strikes the plane and to escape, the pilot skillfully lands the plane on the first island he can find.

The plane's electronics do not work, there is no cell phone reception, and the crew is stranded in the middle of the jungle in a place unknown to anyone. Soon it turns out that the island is run by terrorists... And then you can easily predict what's going to happen.

So why did this unremarkable action film, abounding in its genre logical holes, attracted the audience? The answer is banal and simple - the audience is tired of watching superheroes in tights and super-duper militant women, crushing the huge men. Viewers missed the old-school masculine down-to-earth stories where a strong man is able to successfully complete a mission without resorting to magical superpowers or leaning on a woman's shoulder.

Last year, 'Top Gun: Maverick' proved successful for precisely these reasons. And the success of 'Crash' is in many ways an echo of the success of this picture. Especially since both are about pilots. And the audience has not seen in a long time adventure stories, where the characters fly in the sky over the Earth, not in the distant, distant galaxies.

The creators of 'Crash' have already announced that they have begun work on the sequel. Gerard Butler is sort of not going to play the main role there, but maybe he will appear in a small episode. By the way, the original 'Crash' is called 'Plane' and the sequel will be called 'Ship', which means 'Ship'.

If you are in doubt whether or not to watch 'Crash', then cast your doubts away. The movie will be a nice companion for you for 1.5 hours, but it's unlikely that it will win a special place in your heart.
