This quest blew up the darknet in 2012. Only a select few can pass it - those who will solve the riddles scattered around the world. The goal of the test is to find people with truly high intelligence. The authors - anonymous Cicada 3301 - can be anything from cyber geeks to intelligence officials. What awaits the players in the final? The ingenious hacker Connor and his friends set off on the digital trail of Cicada in search of answers, but NSA agents intend to get ahead of them.

It's not very clear why budding actor Alan Richson decided to try his hand at another field: as a screenwriter, producer and director. One Actor Theater: Alan Richson has created a film for himself, in which he has participated in all major roles, including the lead role. Naturally, the vanity parade turned out to be a spectacle, to put it mildly, controversial: a promising plot based, suddenly, on ARG (a game in an alternate reality, or, more simply, an Internet puzzle), is riddled with conceptual and technical problems, drawn-out scenes and unnecessary heroes. Oddly enough, they also wanted to make this cinematic slop stylish: a lot of ridiculous tricks hurt the eye.

So, according to Wikipedia, Cicada 3301 in real life is an online puzzle that originated on 4chan. To this day, "Cicadas" are the subject of controversy: some consider this a challenge to the Internet public for entertainment, while others in all seriousness believe that this is a test for recruiting into the American special services. In the film, however, "Cicad" was turned into a secret society that uses riddles in the Darknet (wow, created by such "IT Illuminati") to lure genius hackers into their team. Connor Black is one of them.

Anyone in the least familiar with online culture will be shocked by the way Cicada 3301: A Hacker's Quest portrays the Internet. It cannot even be called an artistic exaggeration or fiction. This approach is questionable, if not vulgar. In a thriller format, this does not work: the script for "Cicada 3301" is often distracted by comedy. The creators seem to have stolen ideas from the grandmothers sitting at the porches: in many ways, the tape is simply unconvincing.

In places reminiscent of "Areas of Darkness", in places - a "littered" essay by a schoolchild on a free topic, "Cicada 3301" is a failure project.
