Every day ex-Special Forces soldier Roy Palver begins by fighting off all kinds of assassins: a big guy with a machete, a machine gunner in a helicopter, two beauties in a fast car, a virtuoso sword-wielding Chinese woman, a midget bomber and other psychopaths. And each time, Roy is invariably killed and ends up back in the same day. One day he discovers that his secret ex-wife is dead. Roy decides to get to the bottom of her death, and at the same time to find out how he himself can get out of this unbearable time loop.

Joe Carnahan is definitely one of the coolest action directors and the author of an impressive number of decent, but unfortunately unrealized scripts. He's proven himself with such great films as "Trump Aces," "The Clash" and "The A-Team. But unfortunately did not receive wide recognition and was stuck in a small "career limbo". Especially after futile attempts to push through his version of the "Bad Boys" trilquel and the long pre-production of the "The Raid" remake. In this regard, making each director's work a real gift that you want to read immediately. Which is what I did with "Day of the Smoke."

The plot of this film revolves around former Special Forces soldier Roy Pulver, who, for reasons unknown to him, is caught in a time loop. Over and over again he relives the same day during which nearly a dozen different assassins relentlessly try to kill him. Killing him over and over again. One day Roy discovers that his ex-girlfriend was involved in secret time machine development and was murdered. Roy decides to get to the bottom of why she died and at the same time find a way to get out of the deadly time loop.

One of the main merits of this film is a rather simple but at the same time extremely interesting idea which is a kind of symbiosis of the cult "Groundhog Day" with Bill Murray and a kind of deconstruction of the good old 8-bit games with a minimum of plot content. Practically playing all of their basic components on screen both seriously and with a little bit of banter, which is really fun to watch.

Except that Carnahan failed to keep the narrative homogeneity in terms of the script. In some scenes, Carnahan's film turns into a serious action movie. In others, it ironically banters with anything and everything and presents a "near-deadpool" style of storytelling. Not to mention, in my opinion, the extremely poorly written storyline of Roy's relationship with his son and his transformation into a good father. Thereby, greatly disrupting the pace of the narrative, creating a lot of narrative holes and blurring the impression of what you see on the screen.

In terms of directing, the film was definitely better. Carnahan once again proved that he is a director with an extremely clear and interesting vision of spectacular action on screen. Even though most of the action scenes are CGI rather than practical effects, they look very cool, juicy and interesting.

One of the main merits of this film is the presence of Frank Grillo in the leading role. Grillo did a great job and eagerly demonstrated an extremely rich acting performance. Not only playing the traditional tough guy image, but at the same time bringing a touch of drama and even comedy. Not to mention the impressive form he is in his 50s.

Special mention should be made of Mel Gibson, who managed to create an extremely charismatic and cool image. One can't help feeling that Gibson's potential has not been fully realized. But thank you for that, too. Naomi Watts and Ken Jong gave the most grayish performance possible. In fact, so did Michelle Yeoh, who was given surprisingly little screen time here.
