Review 4K Movie

By making the main characters of the film exclusively female, director Neil Marshall has created a horror film that is far from feminine, capable of keeping you in suspense for an hour and a half and making you jump in many scenes.

So, six friends who love extreme pastimes decide to celebrate their weekend get-together by descending into one of the caves in the mountain range. At first, everything goes according to plan, but suddenly the way up is blocked, and the travelers must find another way out of the cave to stay alive. But the task is complicated by the fact that some aggressive carnivorous creatures roam in the darkness...

As a true master, connoisseur, and lover of horror, Neil Marshall does not miss a single opportunity to scare the viewer. Even before the girls find themselves in the cave, Marshall shows us the terrifying backstory of one of the characters and gives the audience a good scare in a seemingly harmless everyday scene.

And when the characters descend underground, Marshall draws on every possible human fear in this situation. The most powerful of these is the fear of the unknown. Just the realization that you will remain in the cave forever and simply die of hunger or go mad even sooner is enough to cause the characters to have a severe panic attack, which will also affect the viewer on the other side of the screen. Add to this the claustrophobia caused by the narrow cave passages and the frightening, impenetrable darkness in which hallucinations can easily begin! This is the cluster of fears into which the director plunges the viewer, convincingly instilling feelings of anxiety and tension.

But that's not all! Not limiting himself to an atmospheric dark thriller, Marshall rapidly transforms the film into a fantastic horror movie when the characters are hunted by mutant cannibals, leaving them almost no chance of escape. The director masterfully stages scenes of attacks in dark catacombs, which turn into uncompromising bloody carnage. The fantasy plot blends perfectly with the realistic atmosphere of hopelessness, due to the “no way out” situation in the cave. Based on this material, Marshall has created a veritable masterpiece of low-budget horror.

However, The Descent could not be considered a high-class film if it were purely a “situational” adrenaline-fueled thriller, even if it were well-made. But to the viewer's delight, the film's title has a double meaning. The horror of the situation is not limited to the external terrifying circumstances. The most important thing is the behavior of people in life-threatening moments, when each of them can unexpectedly become either a hero or a villain. Marshall does not make any discoveries in terms of the psychology and motivation of human beings, but in the context of this “extreme” story, all the characters' actions take on a special meaning and involuntarily make one think about the essence of Homo sapiens, especially in contrast to those monsters that live in a dark cave...
