Review 4K Movie

This film can be viewed from two perspectives. The first is as a feature film made in the 1990s, and the second is as a standalone story about the legendary Doctor, part of the world-famous *Doctor Who* series and his not-entirely-successful attempt to return after a long absence from the screen.

Yes, the film isn’t brilliant; it’s shot in the spirit of a typical American action movie—and, it must be said, rather poorly. That’s why the film didn’t earn the ratings it deserved—people who watched it simply didn’t get it. And indeed—if a person isn’t familiar with the Doctor Who series, they won’t find anything interesting in this film (most likely). Because this story about the Time Lords, the TARDIS—a wonder machine that is actually a living organism—and the rest, may seem like just another convoluted plot by sci-fi screenwriters. And if you are familiar with the series, the movie will seem a bit bland, because the film’s tone is far removed from what was established in the classic episodes. And in the modern ones, too.

I, however, liked the movie; despite the plot’s lack of dynamism, it didn’t strike me as drawn-out or boring. A couple of fairly witty exchanges, a sweet romantic subplot, and a happy ending—it’s all quite simple.

Paul McGann did an excellent job as the Doctor—chatty, moderately eccentric, and initially a bit of a weirdo (literally, too)—he managed to create and maintain the image of the famous traveler. Daphne Ashbrook played the Doctor’s typical companion; she handled her role quite well. Eric Roberts played the film’s main (and only) villain. I have to admit that as a person, before the Master took over, I liked Roberts better. All of the character’s malice was focused on ruthless actions and obsession. While McGann, as expected, brought the character to life through his acting skills, Roberts limited himself to a malicious smirk that rarely left his face, while his eyes were completely hidden behind glasses.

The film is polarizing—some will like it, others won’t. Fans of the series should definitely check it out, since the creators tried to revive the story of the Others; for everyone else, the film is unlikely to be of interest.
