And our unsuspecting heroes decided to go ahead with the purchase. But if only they’d known what kind of house they’d ended up with! A house “with a surprise” awaited them—a home that was falling apart right before their eyes, where absolutely nothing wanted to work properly! But the undaunted Walter decides to tackle the renovation of their new purchase. A battle with the dilapidated mansion begins—a battle not for life, but for death! Each of us tries to live a better life. To lead a comfortable life—and what, if not a renovation, can make a person’s home more cozy, pleasant, and comfortable? The thing is, many people forget that renovating is hell—and sometimes quite literally. This is reflected in director Richard Benjamin’s film. It would seem that the film was directed by the quite talented and well-known director of the last century, Richard Benjamin, and produced by the master of entertainment, Steven Spielberg, but in the end, the film was undeservedly forgotten. Undeservedly so, because what we have here is a prime example of that rare, genuinely funny comedy—the kind that hasn’t been made in quite some time.

Undoubtedly, the film’s main strength lies in the numerous zany moments that occur during the renovation. Whether it’s the scene with the flying turkey—which had me rolling under the table with laughter—or the entire renovation process, with its constant, large-scale disasters. It all looks insanely funny. This is because Richard Benjamin infused the humor not only into the dialogue but also into the action scenes. In doing so, he gives viewers the chance to watch what’s happening on screen with particular attention and eagerly await the next “trick” from such a wayward house. The funny thing is that even after watching this movie for the hundredth time, I still enjoy what I see on screen just as much as I did the first time. Isn’t that the true merit of a brilliant director and the film itself?

Renovations are always a complete nightmare. Whether they’re focused on a single type of work or involve a total overhaul of the entire house. It’s a nightmare not only because of the constant mess and lack of cleanliness, but also because of the process itself and the pressure it puts on a person. Obviously, the filmmakers decided to exaggerate a lot of things for comedic effect, but as someone who’s currently renovating and building a house, I recognized a lot of things taken straight from real life.

At the same time, the filmmakers don’t try to show the full brutality of renovation work or shock the viewer into completely losing any desire to ever undertake renovations. They approached the whole thing with a surprisingly light sense of humor. In doing so, they give viewers the chance to laugh at both the truly hilarious jokes and the scenes depicting the renovation work itself. At the same time, the film explores the theme of “the daily grind of married life,” which becomes a decisive factor in any relationship. Is it worth starting a family, or are you two completely different?

America’s favorite and “national treasure,” Tom Hanks, is simply magnificent here. Still very young and boyishly innocent, he played his role brilliantly. In many ways, he single-handedly carried both the bulk of the film’s humor and the entire movie itself.

The same goes for Shelley Long, who can safely be called one of the most brilliant and talented comedic actresses of all time. She’s nothing like Melissa McCarthy or Jennifer Aniston from modern comedies. Without a doubt, it was here that Shelley delivered one of the best performances of her career.
