Filmed five years later—without Stuart Gordon and with new screenwriters, but featuring the same cast and still drawing on Lovecraft—Brian Yuzna’s direction is every bit as good as the original. It even expands its thematic scope. References to "Frankenstein" in this highly successful sequel are now appropriate, but not to the original literary source—rather, to the film series, the second installment of which, starring Boris Karloff, was titled, appropriately, "The Bride of Frankenstein".

Yuzhny didn’t follow the beaten path but invented a completely new plot, amplifying the comedic element in the first half of the film and ramping up the pathos (again, tongue-in-cheek) toward the finale. The satire remains satire, but the story takes on new nuances. The experiments evolve. The characters’ narrative weight is amplified. Kane is even more compassionate and torn by inner conflict. Hill is even more bloodthirsty (here, only his head appears, with bat wings attached). West is even more obsessed.

An interesting twist is that the reanimator’s obsession doesn’t border on villainy. Combs portrays the same good-natured Herbert, who now becomes a god-fighter challenging the Almighty, disputing His monopoly on the right to life and death. In the final scenes, the film is simply brimming with religious significance: West’s speeches, the symbolism of the reanimated freaks, the throng of people, the heroes breaking through from the bowels of the Earth toward a New Life, and so on. No elixir can replace a living human being, and Kane’s choice between the living Francesca and the piece-by-piece-reassembled Meg is obvious. A separate joke parodying Shelley involves West’s presentation of his new creation: the legs of a waitress, the arms of a lawyer, the womb of a virgin, and so on. And all of this is in the name of “the Heart”—the only organ remaining from Meg.

The continuity of the plot, the cast, and the stylistic similarities make "Bride of Re-Animator" an integral part of Stuart Gordon’s 1985 version.
