The protagonist, history student Thomas Levy, is fascinated by his studies, loves jogging in the morning and misses his older brother, who lives far away and in a completely different world... It is difficult to evaluate such an unusual film. On the one hand, everything that the filmmakers themselves are capable of is done at the highest level. The actors are first-rate, the staging is excellent, and the soundtrack is finely crafted. In general, the film is in the then fashionable 'neo-noir' style. I am sure that few people who started watching this movie will not see it through to the end.

In the course of the action the director skillfully manipulates the viewer, diluting the plot with insignificant, but entertaining details, constantly taking away from the main thing. Nevertheless, he does it so masterly that it is almost impossible to tear yourself away. Right up until the denouement, one wonders what to hold on to and what it's all about.

But by the end, you realize with regret that the underlying story is rather flat. It contains nothing more meaningful than good is good and evil is evil. The characters are pretty standard: the protagonist is a nice romantic guy, his brother is a nice tough guy, a completely superfluous beautiful chick is the protagonist's love interest, and of course the main villain is simply devious and cunning, and a Nazi too.

I personally felt that I was cynically deceived by the director who, instead of creating a large-scale in-depth picture (as it seems throughout the action), is simply practicing his tricks of playing with the audience.

For those who are going to watch, I'll tell you right away that Marathon Man is a film of its time, that Nazism is involved here only for the sake of cranberries, that stunning action and fairy-tale plot twists are not to be expected either. But those who like simply high class and original direction and, of course, the famous actors involved here, this spectacle is likely to be to their liking.
