Story Movie

Trying to forget about the tragedy that happened to his wife, the once famous pianist Edward Saroyan works in a bar under the name of Charly Kohler. But his attempts to escape from life are unsuccessful: Charly falls in love with the waitress Lena. Comically shy at the sight of Lena, Charly, meanwhile, easily starts an affair with his neighbor, the prostitute Clarisse.

In the bar appears Chico, Charly's brother, who is being chased by two gangsters. Charly can not refuse his brother and helps him to escape from the chase. But he does not suspect that now he has unwittingly implicated not only himself, but also Lena and his younger brother Fido....

Review 4K Movie

I have been familiar with François Truffaut's work for a long time. The first movie I watched was '400 Blows'. The picture struck me. I haven't seen such a pure and light story in a long time. Then there was '451º Fahrenheit', 'The Last Underground' and so on. 'Shoot the Piano Player' - I watched it later than all of them and I must say that it is now my favorite film by the French director.

A little synopsis: a young man named Charly works as a pianist in a tavern. One day his brother shows up at his workplace asking for help. Charly and the waitress who falls in love with him are drawn into his brother's underworld. Bandits begin to hunt for them, and in parallel the story of the pianist's past life, before he came to the ill-fated tavern, is told. Charly could have everything - family, money, fame, but in the end, having lost everything, began to waste his talent in a godforsaken tavern ...

In general Truffaut as always made a very rich movie, in which there is nothing superfluous and everything is in its place. The style of 'Shoot' most of all fits the definition of 'French New Wave' cinematography. This movie has a lot in common with the works of the early Godard, but still there are a few differences. First of all, there is the plot component. The plot is very jagged and choppy, but this only benefits the movie. It is difficult to define the genre of 'The Pianist'. It is simultaneously a detective, a thriller, and a drama..... Nevertheless, 100% it does not belong to any of the above genres. For a detective - too funny, for a comedy - too sad ... Here Truffaut has finally mixed all the movie ingredients in a pile, and as a result he has a really tasty dish. It's like Tarantino's Pulp Fiction from forty years ago. A triumph of postmodernism!

The second reason why 'Shoot the Piano Player' is different from the Godard films is that it has drama. Jean-Luc's films are very deep and aesthetic, but they are also very cold and detached. In this respect, Truffaut's movie is more optimal - an untrained viewer can watch it. There are a lot of interesting characters, movie stunts, a very strange love story (or rather its absence), and a sad ending. Aznavour played well - he showed his hero as a little man who wants to be recognized, wants to break out of his little 'world'. The constant fear of the world around him, the constant crush ... The image of the pianist was later reflected in the characters of Allen's comedies. Allen's characters, like our hero, are small but desperate people.

The movie is very important for the history of French and world cinema. Remarkable camerawork by Raoul Coutard, many good actors - Charles Aznavour, Marie Dubois, Michel Mercier, Nicole Berger, Daniel Boulanger and others. 'Shoot the Piano Player' - was first promoted in the movie 'A Woman is a Woman', released almost at the same time as Truffaut's picture and was very well received. At the time, the French were making movies about movies and weren't afraid to experiment. I recommend everyone to see it
