Story Movie

France, 1949. Desperate to find a job, music teacher Clement Mathieu finds himself in a boarding school for troubled teenagers. There he sees what cruel "educational measures" the rector of this institution Rashan resorts to. The more Rashan bullies the boys, the more aggressive they become. Good-natured by nature, Mathieu is outraged by these methods, but he is unable to openly protest. But one day he, the author of numerous musical compositions, which he modestly hides in his room, comes up with a wonderful idea: to organize a school choir.

Review 4K Movie

A brilliant film. Films like this are born when the director and composer write the music and lyrics together, when the actor mortgages his apartment so that the film can be completed, when everyone gives their all in every scene, every second. It is precisely these moments that make up this brilliant film.

Each episode is like a precious gem. The surprised look on Lecerec's face when the new teacher defends him in front of the principal, or the smile of the forgiven Morange, or Pipino's answer to the principal's question during the exam about how Marshal Ney was killed... There are countless moments like these. There are also truly poignant, heart-wrenching scenes. Mathieu's phrase, “When you write to your parents...” is interrupted by such simple and yet such terrible words: “What if they're not there?”

And the moment with the chair in the restaurant is one of the most expressive metaphors in the history of world cinema, despite its simplicity. And how subtly, and at the same time, with such humor, the conductor's gesture is noticed - tapping on the music stand, calling for attention.

The acting is magnificent. And while this is to some extent normal for adult professional actors (I would like to note the magnificently created image of Rashen), the children, who are in no way inferior to them, inspire sincere respect and admiration. Leker, Lukler, and the other kids, despite spending a negligible amount of time on screen, managed to create vivid, authentic, memorable characters. Moden is undoubtedly very good. I would like to say a few words about Pepino - he doesn't act.

Absolutely. He simply doesn't notice the camera at all. When he is not in the foreground, you can see him making faces, dancing, or grimacing, and all of this is clearly not at the director's request. And even if these children never act in another film, I am sure that Les Choristes will remain one of the most vivid memories of their lives. Perhaps a parallel can be drawn here with the plot of the film itself.

Yes, probably few will be able to break out of the vicious circle that life has drawn for them, but they will never forget this time. And the director, helplessly pounding on the door, cannot silence them. And maybe, thanks to Mathieu, their lives will really change for the better, as happened with Morange.

As for Morange... Every second of his presence on screen is a pleasure. A brilliant performance by Jean-Baptiste Monier. Despite his character's silence, he exudes such powerful energy that words are unnecessary. This is a sign of enormous talent.

Finally, it must be said that although this film will certainly appeal to many, in my opinion, only people who have devoted themselves to either music or children will be able to fully appreciate it.
