Review 4K Movie

I have always been genuinely amused by how trailers sometimes include the most seemingly striking fragments to attract attention, which ultimately significantly influence the perception of the upcoming premiere. Perhaps this is exactly what happened with the film Roofman, where the seemingly comical trailer carries a rather serious story about a very inventive guy whose path took a wrong turn one day.

Roofman was a pleasant discovery for an evening in the dramedy genre with elements of crime, based on real events. The film is filled with determination, courage, creativity, optimism, and a fair amount of despair in an attempt not only to get out of the situation, but also to determine the most correct outcome.

At the center of events is Jeffrey, a man with very honorable titles, the memory and valor of which remain in the distant past, now serving only as a reminder that the old days are gone, but his talents remain, even though it has become increasingly difficult to find use for them in the real world. In search of answers to pressing questions, mainly financial ones, Jeffrey Manchester finds himself in an unexpected and extremely illegal role, which has caused a lot of noise in the media, but which could potentially make his family and loved ones truly happy. This is where Mr. Manchester's story begins, filled with both adventures and their consequences. One day, finding himself in a literal and not-so-literal dead end, the hero accidentally comes across a toy store, seeing in it a prospect and a chance to start from scratch.

If the trailer deserves criticism for its comedic moments, the film itself definitely does not, because everyone will find something to enjoy in it. To be honest, when I found out that Channing Tatum would be playing the lead role, and based on the project's title poster, Roofman didn't promise anything particularly deep or thoughtful. However, both the plot and Channing Tatum himself were pleasantly surprising. I had never considered Tatum to be an actor capable of delivering a worthwhile drama, but Roofman, as well as an earlier project he was involved in, Lulu and Briggs, proved otherwise, revealing his acting potential and emphasizing more than just his physical attributes. I believe that the plot and the character of Jeffrey Manchester were interesting largely because the story is about real people, the burden of problems and worries, as well as other life twists and turns that are often so familiar and understandable, and therefore almost always find their way into the hearts of viewers and evoke sympathy. Channing Tatum and Kirsten Dunst made a wonderful acting duo, with obvious chemistry between them, and it was interesting to watch their relationship develop, especially as we awaited the final chords of this whole saga. In addition to the fact that worthy stories about people of different ages and professions finally began to appear among movie premieres, Kirsten Dunst also had the opportunity to remind us that she is a talented actress who is not yet ready to fade into the background. Peter Dinklage, who has gone through all the stages from an entertaining grumpy boss to a nervous panicker, brings his share of grumbling and sobering comments to the plot, which, moreover, were incredibly cleverly chosen.

It is quite obvious that Roofman still keeps a distance from the realism of the information presented, embellishing and adding excessive optimism and color to a number of very disturbing moments in the form of life on the run and bathing in public toilet sinks. Nevertheless, the story turned out well, with both obvious comedy and true drama finding their place in the circumstances, but it was precisely the excessive optimism that managed to dilute the plot and give the viewer some hope and faith in possible success even in literally hopeless situations. The film leaves behind not only smiles and laughter, but also reflects the boundless scope of human ingenuity and teaches us to appreciate and understand such broad concepts as “a good person” or “the right choice,” and how flexible and ambiguous these definitions can sometimes be.
