Review 4K Movie

The Brazilian thriller *Secret Agent* was among the most acclaimed films of 2025. And unlike many other highly praised films, it truly deserves to be called a masterpiece.

*Secret Agent* is a film by one of Brazil’s most prominent directors, Kleber Mendonça Filho. He previously directed ‘Aquarius’ and ‘Bacurau.’ The lead role was played by Brazil’s most Hollywood-style actor, Wagner Moura (you’ve likely seen him in ‘Narcos,’ 'The Fall of an Empire,‘ 'The Gray Man,’ and others).

It becomes clear to viewers right from the start of the story that ‘The Secret Agent’ is a unique spectacle, when the protagonist pulls up to a gas station and finds someone’s already stinking, shot-up body lying there as if nothing had happened.

In the first 30 minutes of ‘Secret Agent,’ you’ll see three corpses. One is the man killed at the gas station, whom the police never came to investigate, since everyone is busy dancing at the Brazilian carnival. The second isn’t quite a person, but a leg. A leg found in the belly of a dead shark. And the third—no one knows who—was thrown off a bridge by professional hitmen along with a carefully tied-on rock...

Have you already imagined something in the style of Tarantino, Ritchie, and the Coen brothers? Where cool, charismatic men spout quotable one-liners, and the adrenaline-fueled plot hides unexpected twists and intense shootouts?

Forget it. This isn’t Hollywood. This is Brazil. This is Brazil in the 1970s. This is Brazil living under a military dictatorship. So unsolved murders, a criminalized police force, the unchecked power of those in authority, hired killers, and a deadly threat to anyone who crosses powerful people—this isn’t a movie. This is reality.

The main character of ‘The Secret Agent,’ despite the title, is by no means some cunning spy on a dangerous mission. He is a former scientist who, as a result of his scientific work, has become the enemy of an influential company executive. And all of this man’s enemies are doomed to die...

Our hero has no mission to fulfill except one—to try to hide and survive. He also longs to be reunited with his young son.

‘Secret Agent’ is an incredible film. I think many people won’t like it—the plot feels a bit disjointed. A great deal of the characters’ story remains unexplained. Much of it is difficult to understand outside the cultural context, though it obviously makes sense to Brazilians. Much of it feels unresolved and trails off mid-sentence. And the political commentary seems to be cowardly hiding in the far corner.

This film is truly constructed in such a way that it remains a mystery how it managed to retain its integrity at all. In the hands of slightly less talented filmmakers, ‘The Secret Agent’ would certainly have become an unwatchable orgy of chaos.

But Kleber Mendonça Filho is a true talent. That is why his *Secret Agent* brilliantly captures the everyday nature of the horrors that were the norm in 1970s Brazil and immerses the audience in that reality. At the same time, he masterfully juxtaposes this realism with the surrealism that any facts acquire when they become pages of history or cinematic works.

Our ‘Secret Agent’ is, paradoxically, a trinity in its essence. It is an authentic recollection of the recent past. But it is also a distorted story of an almost forgotten past. And it is also a spectacular cinematic fiction that will resonate far more deeply in viewers’ hearts than news reports of real-life nightmares. After all, by and large, we are all very much like the main character’s young son—we are interested in scary news, we worry about the characters in horror movies, and we stubbornly ignore the horrors of our boring reality.

An excellent film. A masterpiece. Truly one of the best of 2025. Definitely worth watching.
