Professional hitman Yosef Shapira is assigned a job to “take out” a man in his hometown, where his father, his dying mother, and his younger brother live. His father disowned his son, the hitman, long ago, knowing full well what he does for a living, but his brother and mother still love him. And even his father cannot completely erase him from his heart. The family reunion ends in tragedy. Yosif is forced to kill the son of a local “boss,” who believed him to be dead, because the son had spotted him on the street, and Yosif could under no circumstances allow the deceased’s father to find out—that would be tantamount to death.

“Little Odessa” is a very colorful and authentic film by the highly respected director James Gray. The film was shot in a style that’s not typically “American”: quite restrained, unassuming, yet very vivid.

The film tells the story of a Jewish family that emigrated from Russia to Brooklyn (USA). It’s a deeply moving and unusual film. A true film, a true human drama—the story of people who have nothing left… not even dreams…

The cast deserves special praise. Tim Roth, Edward Furlong, Vanessa Redgrave, and Maximilian Schell all give magnificent performances… One of Roth’s and Furlong’s best roles…
