Story Movie

In Texas, 33 mutilated bodies were found on Thomas Hewitt's farm. The press dubbed the killer Leatherface, and the man who wore the leather mask was shot dead. However, the police got the wrong man. A surviving witness recounted what really happened when five teenagers were trapped by a madman with a chainsaw.

Review 4K Movie

Marcus Nispel's film is a remake of Tobe Hooper's legendary 1974 horror film. Back in those days, a little-known novice filmmaker shot an experimental schizoid horror film for a pittance, which became the progenitor of all the famous slasher films of the last 30 years. Even the latest box office horror films are influenced by the 1970s version of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre.

Hooper did not become a famous director. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is his only truly outstanding work, but he still managed to make a brilliant film within the narrow confines of the slasher genre. Music video director Nispel does not have the talent of the young Hooper, but he is a diligent craftsman and professional visual artist who managed to make a decent remake of the old masterpiece.

The main difference between the new Chainsaw is that it is made as a purely commercial product, taking into account modern audience demands, while Hooper made an arthouse film.

However, the film only seems “glossy” when compared to Hooper's creation, as Nispel's “Chainsaw” is, by modern standards, a very violent horror film that does not spare the viewer's eyes and nerves. Computer horror films like Blade will seem like children's cartoons compared to the story of the killer nicknamed Leatherface.

Nispel relishes filming scenes of bloody violence, just as Hooper did, emphasizing the ordinariness and everyday nature of the unfolding nightmare. At times, the film seems like a production drama about the difficult life of serial killers. Moreover, the freak with a chainsaw is presented not as a demonic monster, but as a living person of flesh and blood who also experiences pain.

The film's star, Jessica Biel, does not quite measure up to Marilyn Burns (the star of Hooper's film), who perfectly transformed herself into a tortured and terrified victim, but she plays well enough to make her character believable. Once again, it is interesting to observe the classic situation where a frightened girl gradually turns into a real Amazon, no less cold-blooded and cruel than the maniac who is pursuing her.

If the old film was surprisingly bloodless, the new one is full of red paint. However, Nispel does not go so far with the violence that the film causes lasting disgust. After all, he needs to make money. However, this is for the best, since the film is made for a mass audience and is very scary and cruel in itself, so it is quite possible to stop there.
