Review 4K Movie

A rather intriguing prologue to an entertaining film. A husband and wife spoke on the phone earlier that day. He’ll be working late all night, so she’ll have to spend the night alone at home. The house stands isolated, far from town, like a fortress. As usual, there’s not a soul around. Dusk falls. The woman can’t find her phone, so she goes out to the driveway to look for it, leaving the front door wide open. It’s pitch black. She hears suspicious noises behind her. No, it was just her imagination. She returns inside and makes sure to lock the door. Suddenly, an uninvited guest with a glass eye appears and anxiously informs her that someone broke into the house while she was outside by the car. The tension mounts. The stranger behaves more or less normally, but his appearance doesn’t inspire trust. Goosebumps run down her spine. Silence. The woman senses something is wrong in the house and reluctantly agrees to open the door for the man so he can look around. And so she approaches the door, touches the key in the keyhole...

After such a mesmerizing intro, I didn’t want to get distracted by other things, like texting on my phone or commenting on LiveJournal. We were completely immersed in this Irish film, eager to see the intriguing resolution with our own eyes. Rest assured, there’s practically none of that flashy “Astral” stuff in the story. The main focus is on the atmosphere, which draws you into its vortex smoothly and without any sudden jolts. Frame by frame, you realize you can’t tear your eyes away from the screen. Just 6 characters, 3 locations, 2 nightmarish nights, and 1 terrifying wooden mannequin. Beautiful minimalism, an alluring intimacy. And the cinematography is also worth noting. During editing, director Damien McCarthy chose not to chop up the footage to cram in 1–2-second jump scares, instead prioritizing well-crafted suspense. As a result, this thoughtful approach to filmmaking only made the movie better, scarier, and more compelling. And who cares if everything becomes clear halfway through?

So we highly recommend watching it. The Irish are a talented bunch in general—both the directors and the actors and actresses. To be honest, it’s been extremely rare in recent years for any movie to truly grab your attention and keep you hooked. But they do exist, and Damien McCarthy’s film definitely belongs among them. Plus, the Shudder streaming service is a real treat with its abundance of interesting projects, even if there are a few one-time flops mixed in. It’s worth saying a few words about Mr. McCarthy’s directorial debut, “Caveat, which was released during the pandemic. While watching it, you realize where “Oddity” comes from. Spiritual twins—sinister and dangerous. The interiors of both houses exude an unwelcoming chill and silent screams. And you’ll definitely never forget that rabbit with a drum in its hands—it’s guaranteed to haunt your nightmares. So make the right choice by watching the director’s previous work after “Oddity.
