Story Movie

Two couples are traveling through the American heartland in search of adventure. And wouldn’t you know it on Halloween of all days, they stumble upon a mysterious museum of monsters and psychos: “Captain Spalding’s House of Horrors.” Intrigued by a local legend told to them by the museum owner about a maniac nicknamed Dr. Satan, the brave tourists set out to find the tree where he was lynched. But in the pouring rain, on a dark, winding road, their car stalls, and they decide to wait out the night in an old, abandoned house.

All fans (including myself) of trash cinema, chainsaw-wielding maniacs, Freddy, Jason, and others of that ilk will definitely enjoy this movie. Rob Zombie directed this flick in the best traditions of “a family of perverts in the vast expanses of Texas”—stylish, brutal, yet still very cartoonish: it’s all kind of good-natured, or rather—here’s the right word—positive.

It’s worth noting that the characters are a whole other story—they’re very well thought out and unusual: “clown” Captain Spalding, the giggly Baby, the brutal and gloomy Otis, their mom who resembles a preserved “Blonde in Law,” and many others.

You wouldn’t call it a masterpiece, since this genre isn’t really suited for that label, nor is it a classic—too little time has passed for that. However, I’ll say it again: if you’re a fan of stories about how clueless teenagers went off the rails, and if you understand that there won’t be—and shouldn’t be—any major plot twists or surprises, but just pure action… then, of course, you’re more than welcome…
