Review 4K Movie

There is a belief that positive reviews are much easier to write than negative ones. In my case, it's the opposite. The general principle of my writing is this: I write about bad movies with my mind and good ones with my heart. And the heart cannot be formatted. So I have to spend several hours on each positive review. I agonize over it, write it, read it, and still am not satisfied with something. Oh well.

I first saw Subway when I was not yet 15, and even then I was already thoroughly hooked on movies. What I experienced cannot be put into words (again, a cliché phrase, how it infuriates me). The film won me over once and for all. The scene alone where the black singer is accepted into Fred's band, followed by the performance of the song, deserves a round of applause.

For many of today's cinema classics, the 80s and 90s, in my opinion, remain the best period of creativity. Talents “hungry for work” and with pockets full of ideas. Young geniuses who created a new history of cinema in the field of postmodernism. One of them was Luc Besson, who at that time had not yet become the producer of all Europe and was not churning out three scripts a year.

Can Besson's creation be called a masterpiece? I don't know, but in any case, I'm not going to do that. For me, Subway is something more than a banal “masterpiece.” It is a film that has become deeply personal. A term that I “suffered” in one of my first reviews, namely INTIMATE CINEMA (films that have become a part of a person's soul and influenced their worldview). Am I going too far? Too pretentious? Perhaps. But I can't find any other words.

For most people, the subway is nothing more than an everyday routine. But even in the grayest of everyday life, if you want to, you can see beauty and sensuality, and in some places, a “small universe.” All Besson had to do was add some bright colors and dig a little deeper, and the Frenchman opened up a whole new world. The world of the subway with its laws and inhabitants, who often feel more comfortable underground than on the surface.

There are absolutely no minor characters in the film; every hero who appears on screen is endowed with some kind of zest and even charm. Add to this the stunning cast (for some, Subway became their ticket to big-time cinema) and you get images that remain in my memory to this day. Here are just a few of them:

- the taciturn drummer who is always tapping out a rhythm - Jean Reno,

- the dim-witted but very cocky Inspector Batman (and Robin) - Jean-Pierre Bacri,

- the crafty roller (and part-time thief) Jean-Hugues Anglade,

- the black muscleman who occasionally “opens” handcuffs, Christian Gomba,

- the cigarette- and sunglasses-wearing leader of a music group, Eric Serra.

The latter, by the way, was responsible for the film's music. Apparently, the filming itself brought Besson and Serra together, giving cinema one of the best director-composer collaborations in history (The Fifth Element, Léon, La Femme Nikita, The Big Blue). Eric has a natural feel for the mood of the film. His soundtrack is not just musical accompaniment to the images, it is their pulse.

Fred, played by Christopher Lambert (Christophe Lambert), cannot fail to charm with his “couldn't care less” attitude and punk style. He is a hero who refuses to live in a thoroughly fake society where hypocrisy has long been the norm. Living in the moment, Fred finds a freedom that many can only dream of. Fred's hairstyle alone speaks volumes.

Isabelle Adjani, in the role of Helena, is capable of making you fall in love with her at first sight. And I was no exception. Her eyes, lips, and speech are something beyond compare. Her ostensible coldness towards Fred only adds fuel to the fire. There is something angelic about French actresses that you don't see in Hollywood. I remember the scene at the dinner table with Adjani's mohawk hairstyle.

Luc Besson's love story, framed by the unique style of the 80s and spiced up with a spirit of rebellion, turned out to be indecently beautiful and tender. I highly recommend it to fans of “lively” and sincere cinema.

Conclusion. Subway is one of those rare cases where a film touches the viewer's soul, playing on its best notes: smiles, love, and light sadness. After watching this film, you realize that you have become a little bit better.
