Story Movie

In the middle of a snowstorm, deep in Alaska, a train is hurtling at breakneck speed toward an unknown destination. The engineer is dead, and there is no one to stop the steel behemoth. On board are two convicts who have escaped from a penal colony and a young woman, and every passing kilometer brings them closer to either death or salvation...

Review 4K Movie

For me, the movie flew by in a flash. It was a very gripping, suspenseful spectacle.

I’ve never seen acting like this anywhere else... After *Anaconda*, *Enemy of the State*, and *Mission: Impossible*, John Voight really stood out here. You’ll see him in a completely different light. He brilliantly portrayed every emotion a person can feel. And very intensely. Not overacting, but intensely. Such anger, rage, and at the same time cheerfulness, indifference. You can hate the hero, but then genuinely feel sympathy for him. Though, as it seemed to me, John sometimes resembles an unflappable Russian man.

Eric Roberts showed a different side of himself. He’s like this energetic young guy. In all the movies I’ve seen him in, he’s always been the main character—the leader. Here, John is the leader. Eric reluctantly obeys him. You empathize with him just as much as with John throughout the entire movie. Roberts isn’t bad in this movie. And he’s not some hardened criminal maniac. He’s just a guy who went down the wrong path. You can feel for him.

As a pair, John and Eric gave a simply masterful performance. Two magnificent actors merged into a magnificent duo. Every scene is powerful in its own way. I was particularly impressed by the one where Eric climbs into the first locomotive and John won’t let him back in—in my opinion, the most dramatic scene. It’s a mix of pity, rage, anger, hatred, and misunderstanding—all at once. The film’s ending is one of the most impressive.

There is no excessive grandstanding, heroism, affectation, or theatricality here. The fact that the film was directed by one of our own was a surprise. Especially Konchalovsky. Russian and American cinema are on opposite sides of the universe in every respect. Now, on the contrary, they are trying to bridge that gap and bring them closer together. Our cinema is very much like theater, which creates a unique Russian cinematic style. The Americans have their own American style: spectacle, variety, Hollywood—in short. And so it turned out that these two cultures came together through the director. Thanks to this, we got an unforgettable atmosphere, masterful acting, and spectacle. All of this made the film very powerful.

The directing and cinematography are very impressive. There are constant train panoramas and spectacular action scenes. The fact that the story takes place in winter only adds to the spectacle. And the collisions are breathtaking. Plus, the cinematography is very diverse. A wide range of genres are represented here, including drama, thriller, and action. There are many elements of a disaster movie.

All in all, this film has become one of my favorites. My thanks to the talented director. A must-watch!
