Review 4K Movie

It’s a dirty, rotten business that has been going on for many years—on the battlefield, in government offices, and even in the world of cinema.

The John Rambo saga reflects global sentiments throughout its entire run, and in all four films, the main rot oozes precisely from the Americans themselves. *First Blood* conveyed the central idea: NO to war. John’s adversary is America itself, which has abandoned its son. Vietnam is purely secondary here.

‘Rambo II’ makes it clear that the army’s conscience lies not with the leadership but with individual soldiers, and that war has very unpleasant consequences for all parties involved. Interestingly, the anti-war sentiment here is embodied by the antihero—Operation Commander Murdoch, who betrayed John and 25 prisoners of war to preserve diplomatic relations. But since Rambo is the film’s main character, he escapes and returns home, explaining to Murdoch that he was somewhat in the wrong—yet he does not kill him, thus successfully preserving the film’s underlying message. Because war, as already mentioned, is a dirty and contradictory affair in which there can be no “right” or “wrong” sides. Because Murdoch was right after all. If a full stop is placed at the end of a war, it cannot be treated as a comma.

As for *Rambo 3*, the situation is a bit more complex. At the time of the film’s release, America was publicly expressing how ashamed it was of Vietnam—a sentiment that permeates the first two films. But by the time of *Rambo 3*, Afghanistan was already the focus, and no one wanted to admit their mistakes there. Just like Iraq in *Rambo 4*.

War-related movies have always been made this way. Focus on the fates of the main characters, plus an overarching ideology skillfully steered in the right direction. This is exactly how Americans fought their way to the top of the world—with a guilty expression against the backdrop of the flag. As if to say, “Yes, we screwed up, but now we’ll make up for it by bestowing democracy upon the whole world.” This is neither a lie nor the truth. It’s politics. A general direction that doesn’t need “good-bad” labels.

And so it turns out that time and again, wars begin with rousing cheers, end haphazardly with averted eyes, and individual pawns like John Rambo are left to clean up the mess: here we’ll save the colonel, there we’ll beat someone up, and here we’ll fight for our purely civil rights. So *Rambo 3* is a very well-made film in this regard. All we’re capable of is bashing good action movies—the kind we’ll never have the strength, money, or people to make—and secretly stealing all their spectacular elements.
