Review 4K Movie
Philip K. Dick is one of the most significant and outstanding science fiction writers, who wrote 36 novels and more than 150 short stories and novellas. Too intellectual and far removed from the usual sci-fi "entertainment" to become popular as light fiction, his works remained largely unknown for a long time.
The fame of the cult author came to Dick almost posthumously. Philip Dick died in 1982 and Ridley Scott's Blade Runner came out the same year. But the real cult and the phenomenon with the sale of Dick's stories for a lot of money began with 'Total Recall', before which almost no one knew Dick in Hollywood, and after this film, screenwriters and producers began to perceive his stories simply as a gold mine and the richest literary material for film adaptations.
Total Recall is one of the brightest and best films with Arnold and, at the same time, one of the best films by Paul Verhoeven along with Basic Instinct. Of course, we can say that the film is a classic "interplanetary shooter - kill everyone", which bears little resemblance to Dick's story, but this is a completely superficial impression.
Social dystopia, the theme of altered consciousness, falsification of memory, splitting of reality and consciousness, the problem of personal identity in an endlessly changeable and modifiable world that has lost its recognizable appearance and, of course, the ambiguity of what is happening (dream or reality) - all the main themes of Dick that excite his imagination and reflected in his novel are preserved in the film.
What else sets the film apart and makes it stand out from the myriad of "interplanetary shooters"? First of all, the script and direction. A very solid and solid script, it can be greatly modified and different from the original Dick, but, of course, very original, sophisticated, high quality and thoughtful. As for the direction, here with the naked eye you can see the hand of the master and the inimitable style and handwriting of Verhoeven - a stunning visual series, an abundance of violence, cruelty and rather naturalistic scenes, an ironic narrative, black humor and a rather subtle satire on the social order.
The acting, as always with Verhoeven, is at a very high level. Douglas Quaid is one of the best roles for Arnie. In the picture, he looks just a fine fellow, demonstrating not only the physical strength of his perfect body and charisma, but also his remarkable acting talent. Arnold performed here in his usual and ideally suited role of a "pitching" -intellectual, showing not only steel muscles, but also a sharp mind, self-irony and a healthy dose of humor (in places very black).
Many of his heroes, including Quaid, say: "Be a person, be strong, be a good fellow, be able to rely only on yourself." What's interesting is asking the sacramental question at the beginning of the film: "If I'm not me, then the hell, who am I?" and trying to remember who he is, at the end of the picture, finding answers to all the questions, Quaid remains an implanted personality, remembering what Kuato said: “A person is determined by actions, not memories. You are what you do. "
Sharon Stone, for whom "Total Recall" became a breakthrough and a ticket to big cinema, perfectly played Quaid's fake wife. Beautiful, spectacular, temperamental, with a bewitching and "scorching" cold look, she is simply magnificent in the negative role of a mad bitch, perfectly wielding weapons and martial arts. The rest of the actors also played excellently, organically fitting into the plot of the film: charming Rachel Tikotin, very colorful and memorable in negative roles, Michael Ironside and Ronnie Cox, effectively playing secondary villains (he had almost a similar role in "Police Robot").
The technical excellence and visual concept of the picture (especially the shooting of a panorama of Mars) is beyond praise: excellent camera work, scenery, editing, sound, sound editing, magnificent and very believable mutant make-up and luxurious special effects. An excellent futuristic soundtrack from the Hollywood veteran Jerry Goldsmith fits perfectly into the visual range of the film.
Paul Verhoeven filmed not only a very high-quality fantastic “non-stop” action, but also one of the brightest and best films on the theme of adventure interplanetary travel, especially concerning travel to Mars. All subsequent paintings (not only class B, but also A) relating to this subject are perceived exclusively as a fake or a pitiful likeness. Verhoeven's cult film. Classic.
