Invisible angels flit through walled Berlin, peering into the homes, thoughts, and souls of its inhabitants. One of them is ready to exchange eternity in paradise for the love of a circus acrobat. But can the celestial creature endure earthly feelings?

Review 4K Movie

To be honest, I still can't make up my mind and understanding of this movie. Whether it's a masterpiece that has no equal, or whether it's a little intelligible nonsense.

One thing is for sure - this is probably the most depressing and hardest movie to watch. The philosophical monologues are directed into eternity, they touch and make you think, but combined with almost static picture, sad music and general melancholy playing around they make you feel incredibly sad.

The music frankly kills. Some kind of Requiem. But this requiem sounds for the living people. For people who can no longer simply enjoy life, dream, fool around...

The visuals are magical, it's like a revived photo gallery in front of us. But the pace is too slow, until the camera makes one move you have time to not only enjoy the image, soak up the atmosphere and run everything through yourself, but you also have time to quietly hate everything.

But much is redeemed by the inner charge, by the flow of thought that pours from the screen...

When a child was a child... The most piercing, the most subtle, the saddest and warmest childhood memory is given to us by this monologue heard here and there throughout the film. It opens the film, it can be heard in different episodes... It's always different and always a different memory. But it is so familiar, so close and warm. So familiar... You remember your childhood... you remember that naivety, that innocent smile, those carefree days... and your soul becomes heavy... It seems that it was so long ago... You feel like a living corpse. Back then, you had the world to conquer, you had dreams... Now it's all gone. All that's left is a cold city... People who don't care about you... Problems, routine, loneliness...

People's thoughts... All have their problems, their little tragedies and triumphs... but all of them are miserable. All of them are hard. All of them are suffering from life. Their lives have no meaning. Their gaze is clouded. And only the elderly and the children "glow." Some because they don't know anything about life yet, and others because they know almost everything. They're in no hurry. They're entertaining themselves with memories... warm, cozy memories that pierce through you like little needles. They make you sad, smile and rejoice with them.

It's so sad to see all this. So sad to know that you can do nothing...

And only when death breathes down your neck do you realize what this life is good for. What you lived for and why you smiled. You understand that the innocent look of a child and the first drops of rain, the swaying of grass and jumping on one leg, potatoes in ashes and sunrise... all this is much more important than all the money in the world, than fame and fortune... Memories... They are dearer than anything... Simple words... Simple memories... But longing and sadness envelops you... The world seems submerged in twilight....

And everything is bad. And even angels have a tempter... He will give a dream, promise a fairy tale, and out comes... Our world is cruel for angels too... And there is only love. When two hearts love, they are old men and children at the same time. They are one part. It's easier for them to live. Their lives are colored...

But what is the meaning of life? Why do we feel this way and not that way? Why... A million questions and only music in answer... And even the angels know nothing....

Very dark movie. Gloomy people, gloomy scenery, gloomy thoughts. And there is not a single ray of light in this movie. There are only great monologues on the themes of childhood, loneliness, the past, the search for oneself in this world... But there's too much melancholy in them. At times one gets the impression that Wenders wanted to cram all the sadness of the world into this film... And it almost seems to have succeeded.

Uncomfortable movie. An unfathomable flow of thoughts.
