Review 4K Movie

I’d been wanting to watch "Maurice" for a long time, and unexpectedly, it exceeded all my expectations.

This is one of those rare cases where the film adaptation is far more interesting than the novel. The book is unbearably tedious to read—it’s not E. Forster’s best work—but the film (after a somewhat slow start) captivates with its beautifully rendered Victorian atmosphere and the emotional intensity hidden beneath the surface of social propriety.

The scene at the end is particularly striking—when Hugh Grant’s character closes all the windows in his bedroom—it’s like a symbol of the life he has turned his back on. At that moment, you realize that the past can never be brought back...

In my opinion, the film clearly echoes *Return to Bracehead* based on the novel by Evelyn Waugh—the same era, a similar mood, and even the actress playing the wife of Hugh Grant’s character is from that film (*Return to Bracehead*, where she played Sebastian’s eccentric sister). Furthermore, actor James Wilby—who plays Maurice—bears a striking resemblance to Evelyn Waugh. This is clearly no coincidence; it was obviously part of the director’s vision. For those who don’t notice this resemblance, the casting choice for the lead role is probably truly baffling.

The director succeeded in accurately conveying the mood of the protagonist, who finds hope for happiness at the end. Overall, D. Ivory infused the novel’s text—which is rather lacking in emotion—with emotional depth; this is yet another strength of the film.
In general, Ivory beautifully depicts turn-of-the-century England in his films—it’s his era, and he loves to recreate it, even though he’s American.

To sum up—I recommend this film to all fans of D. Ivory’s work, lovers of subtle stylization, and fans of English novels!
