Review 4K Movie
During the interrogation of a young Arab boy, the police overdid it, as a result he ended up in the hospital, and television broadcasted the whole country about police brutality. In response, the impoverished suburbs of Paris literally exploded, spilling into the streets unprecedented violence: burnt cars, wounded police officers, ransacked buildings. Reinforced detachments were brought into the areas of riots, any accumulation of youth is immediately dispersed. Three friends: Vince, Said, Huber gather in the morning to kill another day, they are children of those areas from which it is impossible to get out, here, each born is doomed to the end of his days (often very short) to live without any hope of change. Hopelessness, despair, poverty are the eternal companions of the guys from the ghetto.
There are three just like from a joke: Said is an Arab, a smart, talkative boy, Huber is black, strong, fast, reasonable, Vince is a Jew, nervous, twitchy, aggressive. They start their day with a survey of the area, find out where they burned what, who was beaten, where the police were especially atrocious. The camera goes along with them through a real concrete jungle: identical block houses, narrow streets, no decorations and architectural delights. Everything in the area is built extremely functional, i.e. the task of placing the maximum number of people on the minimum area was solved quite successfully. It's a pity that this functionality looks very poor.
In a conversation, Vince boasts that he picked up a gun that was lost by a policeman, the television just constantly turns reports on this topic. He needs a gun to kill a policeman, in Vince's view, this is the only way to make the authorities respect the poor. I do not want to retell the plot, I will only mention that in the film the director showed the viewers one day in the life of these guys, we will see what places they go, with whom they communicate, fight, how they have fun. Everything is filmed on black and white film that cuts off all unnecessary, it creates the effect of minimalism: emphasizing the poverty of the world in which the characters live and the absence of bright colors in it.
This tape is a prediction, ten years before the pogroms in the Parisian suburbs, Kassowitz saw and showed us the hatred of society that had accumulated in the poor ghettos. The life of an unfamiliar Europe is revealed to the viewer, usually we see on TV - beautiful buildings, well-groomed streets, happy people, in general, it seems that this is just heaven on Earth. And behind the scenes is exactly what Kassowitz showed so well - a large social class that has found itself outside this beautiful, new world. But the picture is not a simple social propaganda, since the director's talent made it possible to do without anti-capitalist propaganda.
Young guys do not have any ideology (it is naive to believe that the same Vince's rhetoric contains at least some political convictions, Vince is too stupid for that), their protest is based on instincts rather than political convictions. However, it should be noted that the same Huber, the most educated of the whole trinity and the only one who passionately wants to break out of the ghetto, knowing full well that, remaining in it, he will either become a criminal or stupidly drunk from hopelessness, periodically expresses rather mature thoughts. But he hardly read them in political books, most likely his thoughts formed on their own, unlike some intellectual leftist, he simply does not have time to read.
The hatred of the police for the "scum" also has quite distinct reasons - fear. Probably most of the police officers, when they entered the service, were good people who wanted to help others to the best of their ability, protecting society from injustice. But in the service they faced an irrational force - hatred - youth groups that unreasonably smash everything that comes to hand, while not putting forward any slogans. They kill each other, because of a trifle, not putting either their own or someone else's life into a penny. It seems that this hatred is supported solely by the lives of those guys who happily surrender to it. The police have no chance of winning such a war, because only politicians who do not want to change anything can solve this problem. Therefore, she responded with hatred to hatred, the police torture, beat, intimidate, torture, kill the guys. Spilled blood only spins up the millstones that grind the lives of people who are prisoners of circumstances.
As I said above, the director does not act as a judge, but as a chronicler. Such an objective movie is very rare, yes, yes, I especially emphasize the moment that the tape is extremely objective to all sides of the consecrated conflict: ghetto residents and policemen. Kassowitz identified the problem, sanctifying it in all possible angles, leaving the viewer to figure out the idea of how to get out of all this crap?
The actors seem to live with their characters, there is not the slightest hint of falsity or insincerity, they reliably and extremely convincingly transferred their characters to the screen. Although, especially Kassel should be noted, here he is simply magnificent, instantly enraging, nutty Vince is something.
