Doinel leaves the army at the age of 20. After failing to get Christine to love him, he continues his search for the perfect woman. He gets a job at a detective agency, where he fails any case that he is assigned to investigate.

He finally gets the opportunity to demonstrate his "technical fitness" by properly wrapping a shoebox in a store. Doinel must find out why the shop owner, Monsieur Tabard, feels that someone hates him, and if there is a conspiracy against him.

Somehow, staying at work later than usual, Doinel meets Fabien, Tabard's wife, and enters into a love affair with her.

One of Truffaut's best films, yet very simple and unpretentious. In my opinion, the nature of Truffaut's talent is closest to the aesthetics of Stolen Kisses - a discreet, delicate look at a young city dweller, a kind of momentary sketch, devoid of any didacticism. The story about the change of Antoine's works, his intrigues is completely devoid of a dramatic component in favor of lyrical intonation, soft friendly humor.

Bertolucci shot 'Before the Revolution' around this time, Truffaut manifested with Godard, and the film was shot extremely serene and quite bourgeois. The key to peace of the protagonist is his confidence that he will find some work, some money for coffee and a girl.
