The Lisbon family has five teenage daughters. After 13-year-old Cecilia commits suicide, her surviving sisters become the object of intense scrutiny by everyone in the town, especially the neighborhood boys, who keep an eye on the girls.

Wishing to shield their daughters from the outside world, the parents gradually cut off all communication with the outside world and forbid their daughters to leave the house.

Review 4K Movie

Today, when I saw the post about the anniversary of this film on the Instagram of the wonderful Elle Fanning, I decided to make a movie night, because the title seemed very catchy, and I had heard about this film before. So I'm writing a review from 2020 (during the pandemic, the scenes with all-not-self-isolating girls are especially painful to watch).

A lot of movies and shows have been watched about suicide and teen suicides in particular, but this one is probably distinguished by the numbers-the number of suicides and the age of the younger girl (at her 13 never thought about suicide, it breaks my heart when you start thinking about what must be going on in a child's soul to think about such things). But apart from that fact, the movie is not shocking, does not cause fits of uncontrollable tears, does not make me pause and scream into the screen from the overflowing emotions, though, it seems, I am an impressionable girl, and the film has a fertile theme. Does the film lack courage? Maybe. But that's how we usually see other people's lives. Pieces. Fragments, thanks to which we think up a complete story. As I think it's incomplete disclosure of the girls' characters (Lux and Cecilia somehow distinguishable from the others), the lack of explanation for the motives of the mother, the strange behavior of the father makes the story even more painful and oppressive.

But, my God, what a light and uplifting video sequence. Especially at the beginning. I never thought I'd want to visit such an old America, with horrible men's hairstyles, strange clothes and some impossibly beautiful sunshine in the leaves of the let-it-sick trees. Also a huge plus of the picture is the music. And not just because you want to hear all the soundtracks to bits, but because it fits the moments perfectly. The scene of the party at the house of a hopeful future actress had unironic goosebumps running down my skin.

One could discuss for a long time what the movie wanted to say, what the parents are wrong about, how awful the other adults around them look, how terrible it is to die at 13-14-15-16, but all these conversations will be obvious, at least to most.

All I want to say is how the movie affects the emotional component. Without knowing English, you can turn off the subtitles, not read the movie description, not dissect the composition of the frame, not peer to see if the actors are convincing enough, but just watch, listen to the noise of leaves and breathing and music, and you'll understand everything. And there will be a longing. But a kind of pleasantly cinematic longing. Which, hopefully, will pass by morning, or maybe even earlier.

Can I say that the film lacked depth? Probably a little.
