Review 4K Movie
Director Parker Finn's "Smile" can definitely be called one of the main pleasant surprises and "dark horses" of this year. Initially, the studio invested in the production of this film, but did not see any commercial potential in it and decided just to add it to their streaming service Paramount+. However, the studio suddenly changed their mind shortly before the premiere and sent the film to cinemas. The result was a commercial success that "squeezed" money from even some AAA films and a positive reception from critics.
The plot of this film revolves around Rose Cotter, who works in a remote psychiatric emergency room. One day she encounters a seemingly typical patient - a student who a few days ago witnessed the suicide of a teacher. The girl, in an hysterical state, claims to be sane and being persecuted by some malevolent entity. Afterwards, she slits her own throat with a frightening smile. From that moment on, Rose begins to see the smiling suicide in the most inappropriate places, and her life gradually turns into a nightmare.
It is worth admitting that most horror films suffer from one significant problem - their authors come up with interesting and unusual ideas, but break them down properly to a full-fledged story. "The Smile" is no exception, the only controversial element of which can be safely called the script. The idea of the tape is interesting enough. But to develop it properly in the framework of almost two hours of timing the authors of the picture were unable to. That is why there is catastrophically little happening on the screen, the story seems frankly dragged out and most of the story just tramps in the same place.
That said, the film is definitely pulled by Parker Finn's direction, which flattens out the flaws of the script as much as possible. Despite the fact that this film was a full-length feature directorial debut for Parker Finn, "Smile" can definitely be called the work of a talented, mature and experienced director within the genre. At a time when many of today's horror films emphasize fast-paced, fast-paced storytelling, Finn has taken an entirely different path. Almost from the very first frame, Finn sets a rather sinister and at the same time mysterious atmosphere, which he develops throughout the screen time "at a low start" and "in slow motion. As if deliberately ignoring the abundance of screamers. Instead, "marinating" the viewer in anticipation of the next scrimmer and tossing it in at a highly unexpected moment. It is around these manipulations and building up the growing level of suspense and anxiety. As there are even fewer scrimmers in this film than you would expect before watching this film.
Performer of the main role Sosie Bacon worthily "got into character" and quite naturally played this image on the screen. Fully conveying the growing level of anxiety and paranoia that overwhelms her character. Caitlin Stacy, who is not given much screen time, is also very good. However, she makes a really creepy and uncomfortable impression every time she appears on screen. Kyle Gallner and Jesse Usher didn't seem to play badly. But in my opinion, they look a little insecure throughout the screen time. It's like they don't understand what they're doing in this film.
