I managed to attend a preview screening of The Expendables 2. I went just for fun, not hoping for anything special... But, you know, I liked this movie. It's sweeping, bright, stellar, funny, and non-committal. I don't know what the movie critics' reviews of this movie will be (we can assume mixed), but I'll try to give my independent assessment.

So, let's start with the positives.

The first is, of course, the cast. It seemed simply impossible to get even more stars in one movie than in the first The Expendables. But no! In "The Expendables 2" there are even more famous action actors! And it should be noted that in this movie there is no such a milling effect, which was characteristic of the first movie. All actors play quite certain roles and logically enough divided into protagonists and antagonists. Sylvester Stallone is at the top of his game. And it seemed to me that he even got younger since the first movie. To think that he is 66 years old! Look at 66-year-old Russian men - many of them can't even walk by themselves, and Stallone's dice on his stomach are showing through. I was also very pleased with the expanded roles of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis. Jean-Claude Van Damme is simply unreflective, and Chuck Norris is the bomb! These guys haven't been touched by time, it's like they're canned. And what is amazing, most of the stunts they perform on their own, and this at their age - a real achievement. What to talk about the great physical shape of all the actors. Let them make many viewers smile, and some openly laugh at their desire to gain eternal youth, but just look at those who do it (as a rule, they are flabby solid men, looking older than their years and proud of their "solidity"), you are imbued with respect for the actors involved in this movie. So the cast is an undeniable asset to this movie. And the old guys (and if these guys can be called that) belong here.

The next positive aspect is the special effects. The budget of this movie - some 80 million (minus the actors' fees, among which 15 million - Stallone and 10 million - Arnie, there is at best 40 million for the shooting process itself), but how this budget is used! This movie has many vivid scenes and spectacular moments. Constant shootouts, explosions and fights. A real throwback to the era of the 90s, but with the use of more modern technology. And all this splendor looks as natural as possible, though many laws of physics and chemical processes are ignored here, to put it mildly. In general, if you are looking for spectacle - this movie is for you.

More pluses are the music, sharp and tense, very suitable for the action taking place on the screen. I was also pleased with the director's work: the action on the screen became more regular and consistent. And I'm also happy about the non-3D format, because my eyes are already tired of these bulky glasses. Besides, the atmosphere of the movie, namely, the abundance of jokes, some lyrical moments and the theme of friendship, so masculine and strong....

Minuses of this movie are not so many. But one of the most important is the plot. Though it became more logical than the plot of the first movie, but it is clearly raw and underdeveloped. In principle it is very glad that the plot is partially based on the reality around us and includes a little superficial analysis of the geopolitical situation in the modern world. But still, the threats to the world and the actual capabilities of the gang "The Expendables" look too exaggerated. One of the main advantages of the plot, and of the movie itself, is not a strong connection with the previous part. Though most of the characters are the same and there are a lot of references to the previous movie, but I think "The Expendables 2" can be watched by those who didn't have a chance to appreciate the first "The Expendables". I won't reveal the plot, but I will note that it is moderately interesting and moderately naive. Therefore, you do not need to be an intellectual to predetermine the denouement of the movie. Good will win, but evil will not let good get bored, especially these complex relationships will apparently continue in "The Expendables 3".

In conclusion, I note that this movie quite definitely surpassed the previous part, became much livelier and more fun. You should not expect something new and previously unexplored from it - it is a true classic in the action genre. Therefore, if you are a connoisseur of art and "high", I do not think that you will like this movie. It is aimed at a mass audience, created for those who want to relax and enjoy. In general, go to this movie and look at the unique cast, remember the "dashing" 90s and get a charge of positive emotions from such not young, but such lively and cool guys.
