Following the death of his ex-wife, the once-famous film director Gustav Borg arrives for the funeral. He reunites with his adult daughters, whom he hasn’t seen in many years, and offers his eldest daughter, Nora—a stage actress—a role in his new film. Gustav plans to shoot the film based on a very personal screenplay and in the house where several generations of his family lived, but Nora, who is resentful toward her father, refuses. A young Hollywood star then takes her place.

Renowned film director Gustav Borg arrives for his ex-wife’s funeral and reunites with his daughters, Nora and Agnes. Nora is a stage actress, and her father offers her a role in his new film, but she declines.

This film is about difficult communication within the family, about traumas passed down from generation to generation, and about overcoming inner resentments and unspoken feelings.

Father and daughter speak different languages; he writes a screenplay as his way of expressing himself and communicating with her, but she refuses even to read it. Gustav is a creator, just like Nora, and they are more alike than they realize. Communication within the family works best through the language of cinema, but they still have to get there.

Ultimately, Gustav casts Hollywood actress Rachel Kemp in the lead role, and she stands out from the rest of the cast—not only through her character but also through her own personality. Rachel is honest and open, and she stands in stark contrast to the other characters.

The film features a wonderful cast: Elle Fanning, Stellan Skarsgård, and Renate Reinsve. Elle gave an amazing performance as Rachel. Stellan portrayed his character as egocentric, yet at the same time warm and profound. At first, it seems as though the main character is his daughter Nora, played by Renate Reinsve, but after a while, the focus gradually shifts to her father, Gustav.

The film is stylish, concise, subdued, yet beautiful.

The father wanted to make a film about his daughter, to show how important she is in his life, and that he understands her. But the lead role went to an American actress, a different cinematographer was hired, and the studio isn’t interested in releasing it in theaters (in the era of streaming services). And what turns out to be more important: simply making the film, or having his daughter agree to star in it?
